DOMESTIC TOURISM DEVELOPMENT TRENDS IN GEORGIA AGAINST THE BACKGROUND OF THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC

Summary

The year 2020 has presented the whole world with the most difficult challenges. Until recently, no one could have imagined that this would change the way of life and rhythm of the world. The pandemic has significantly changed the economic development parameters of the countries as well. According to the data platform statista.com, the tourism sector is one of the sectors most affected by COVID-19 in terms of both demand and supply. Tourism, which is in an active phase of development, has moved to the stage of uncertainty and all related activities have actually reached the stage of dormancy. Therefore, the basic statistical characteristics of tourism have changed significantly in more or less all tourist countries, including Georgia. After the first wave of the virus spread, international tourism was almost paralyzed, while domestic tourism began to revive and its statistical characteristics increased considerably in the third quarter. But in the fall, the increase in the spread of the virus due to the second wave also pushed domestic tourism into the target phase. Under the conditions of lockdowns and strict regulations, the spread of the virus has decreased, the gradual lifting of restrictions has raised expectations for the revival of domestic tourism. But now the country, like the rest of the world, is waiting for the third wave of the virus to spread. The epidemiological situation is deteriorating, hence the area of active tourism activities is still limited. Since the most active period for tourism is still summer, we should hope that the peak wave of the disease will pass and after the successful implementation of mass vaccination, against the background of a calming epidemic, domestic tourism will gather strength and begin the process of its rise. What are the expectations, when will the growth rates of tourism achieved so far be maintained again and, moreover, increase, it is difficult to say. It is also clear that for the tourism boom after the pandemic, the tourism sector must adapt to the new reality. In order to monitor the situation, we considered it necessary to identify the tourism products required for the development of tourism in post-pandemic Georgia. Using the Google Drive platform, we conducted a survey, according to the results of which we analyzed the attitudes of Georgian citizens towards the development of domestic tourism.

A statistical observation tool was prepared. At the first stage, the research design was selected and the deadlines were set. It was considered optimal to conduct the survey using a social networking platform. 308 respondents participated in the study.

After analyzing the research results, we can conclude: Prior to the announcement of the Pademi, there was a growing trend of domestic tourism;  In the first phase of the pandemic, domestic tourism was revived, and in terms of its widespread scale, it moved to the dormant phase; The prevailing population is 31-50 years old among tourists and 25-44 years old among the respondents; 60.5% of respondents had a history of traveling in the country and the highest proportion (52%) traveled with friends and relatives; High rates with family and travel alone; Georgian residents prefer hotels and guesthouses over their travel facilities, as well as the rate of using their relatives' apartments;  For the majority of respondents, the purpose of the trip was to visit relatives and friends, although after the end of the pandemic, leisure, fun and recreation moved to the first place.   Most of the respondents are going to spend 501-1000 GEL while traveling. Preferred locations for domestic tourism were: Ushguli, Martvili and Okatse canyons, Abudelauri colored lakes, Bakhmaro, Gomi mountain, Dashbashi canyon, Kazbegi, Sighnaghi and others. Respondents are most attracted to mountain, adventure tourism, eco and agro tourism.
